More Networking - More Cold Calls

I said that I was going to do things differently and I have. I am dedicating the beginning of my day to job search 4 hours.  The last 4 will be updating my skills.

I have started making cold calls (so to speak to consulting firms).  I will be going through all of my old contacts.  I also will contact family and friends to keep their eyes open.

I contact J and got leads. It's a far commute but I have to do what I have to do.

No more insanity.  

Albert Einstein once said:

"Insanity:doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

During my times of unemployed.  Which has been on and off ever since 2008, I was INSANE (according to Einstein). My job search was basically the same.  I really was not getting anything accomplished.  I landed a few interviews, but did not land the jobs. The jobs I did land were contracts or had budget cuts.

In 2008 I worked for a financial firm.  2008 was a horrible year for Finances..uggh.

Worst year for jobs since '45

Annual loss biggest since end of World War II. Unemployment rate rises to 7.2%.

Einstein also said, "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning."

Yup, he was right.

So, I decided to change and do things differently.

Things I do the same are participate in tweetchats for job seekers.  Document everything in jibberjobber.com. Although I do like to write things down.  I mean literally write on paper.  

I think it is good to have things on paper.  Servers crash.  Modems go down.  If I document EVERYTHING on a web app, there is always a possibility of a computer gliche and I will not ba able to access my information.  

I'm writing it down.

What I am doing differently is:

More networking
Cold - calling
Connecting with people on LinkedIn in the field I am interested in (in my city)
Gong to trade shows
Meetup.com

I actually contacted a consulting form today.  Cold-call and sent my resume.  

I contacted a co-worker from an old job and got a lead.  It will be a long commute but it is better than nothing.

Before knowing my pitch, know my audience, their communication style and their needs, and tailor my pitch to resonate with them.

Networking......

Be the professional you are, explain what you're looking for, and be specific when you meet new contacts who have the capacity to make a useful introduction for you. Remember: You cannot focus on your job search when you talk to people about your goals; if you do, you become just another desperate job seeker. Instead, focus on what you have to offer: ideas, suggestions, and expertise relevant to your field. Offer it in exchange for an introduction to someone at one of your target organizations, and you'll be on your way.

Target and identify specific organizations where you want to work.

I knew this already..but, a reminder is always good.

Employers have to shuffle through stacks of résumés, and they want candidates who know their specific needs. You should fine-tune your résumé and cover letter. "Spend two hours going through the company's website, executive LinkedIn profiles, blogs, and industry articles—before you even touch your résumé or cover.

From #jobhuntchat I learned, There's nothing wrong during an interview with asking how a specific question will be used to assess your candidacy.

Unemployed Again 

On Friday, December 28, 2012. I was called into my managers office and told it was my last day. I worked the entire day as usual. I wish I had known earlier, so that I could have been better prepared.  (You know - all the stuff on my desk.  Plants, calendar, backrest on chair, foot rest under my desk.

Fortunately, I lived near work so I was able to go ho during lunch.  Take a bag of stuff.  And get more bags to take the rest of my belongings home. I knew that it was coming so I was not shocked.

Now, it's time to let God do his thing.  I have been down this road before. It was not easy. Not easy at all.  But God never left me.  Even though sometimes in my silly unfocused mind.  It seemed like it.  

Yesterday's Sermon had "MY" name written all over it. Psalm 23.

I just went on line and applied for Unemployment. We'll see what happens.
